What is a domain name?

A domain name is a method used to find a particular website on the Internet. Businesses, governments, individuals and other organization use domain names (also known as Internet names) for Internet sites. Anyone can own a domain name. How long can my domain name be?
A domain can be up to 63 characters long.

How can I find out if a domain name is available?

Use our register searchbox and enter any name of your choice and click go. This will tell you if your desired name is available for registration.
What if the name I want is taken?
All you can do is either offer to buy it from the owner, choose an alternative name or wait to see if the current owner lets it expire. If the name infringes on your intellectual property rights you could take legal action.

What characters can I use?
Only alpha-numeric and hyphen characters can be used. (Hyphen characters can't be used at the front or end of a name).
How can I find out who owns an Internet name?
Do a Whois search to find out details about domain owners.
How can I offer to buy a domain name from a domain owner?
Once again using our Whois search will display a domain owners phone number or email.

Once I buy a domain do I own it forever?
You register a name for your chosen period, at the expiry of this period you have the option to renew it or let its registration lapse, after names are allowed to lapse they are deleted by the administrator and then anyone can register them.

What is a NIC Handle?
If you register a domain name, and are listed as the Administrative, Technical, Zone or Billing Contact, you will be assigned a NIC ID that is associated with your information. Usually the next time you register a domain, you can use the NIC ID and you will not have to re-enter your personal information.

I have a domain, how do I put up a website?
If you have a domain name this does not mean you have webspace. You must pay a hosting company for webspace to use your domain name on.
