12/9/2004 Angst - Worrying about too much shit
Filed under: * Minutae — Korgmeister @ 2:02 am…
I’m also worried because I finally decided to register a domain on a whim, that domain being the-stupid-it-burns.us
The trouble is the outfit I registered it with, Ezinames seems to be somewhat shonky. They said in their Terms and Conditions they would provide a 7 day free trial of web hosting, after which it would be charged at the extortionate rate of $599US per year. However, it said you could just log into your domain management panel and turn it off at any time.OK, seemed easy. Except for one thing, it wants me to verify my account by printing out this form with my credit card details (which I’d already given to them) and then faxing it to some number in America.
At this point I would like to ask - Hello! Are we in the fucking 1980s here?
Just about any goddamn two-bit operation can set up an secure credit card gateway and these fools want me to fax something with their signature on it to America? That dog won’t fucking hunt.Anyway, on the control panel it says I have no domains but I received an automated e-mail saying the web hosting for the-stupid-it-burns.us has been activated. This confuses me no end, of course. But for good measure I decided to send a help-desk ticket requesting that the web hosting for that domain be immediately canceled.
I have no idea how this is going to turn out. Possible scenarios include.
#1 - Ezinames welcomes the 21st century, verifies my credit card and lets me turn off the fucking webhosting. (Good thing)
#2 - Ezinames refuses to acknowledge my credit card, cancels my account because I’m not going to pay them. (Nothing lost, nothing gained)
#3 - Ezinames fails to give me the domain, but bills me for the webhosting to this fictitious domain. (World of Pain)
Frankly, if they try anything funny they haven’t got a legal leg to stand on. Firstly, they’re based in Perth, Australia, so they have to comply with the Fair Trading Act, which forbids misleading and deceptive conduct and frankly I can call Consumer Affairs and make their lives very unpleasant. Also, if they try to bill my credit card for that insane sum, it will bounce. Finally, they violated their own Terms & Conditions, which stated I could turn off the free webhosting trial at any point I wanted. There’s few things as fun as explaining to someone that you’ve just hoisted them on their own legal petard.

Also, I put $220 on my credit card instead of $200 which was silly. I want as little money on that thing as possible lest the Sheisters at Ezinames try to fuck me over for $599US for hosting I said I didn’t want on a domain they claim they haven’t got around to registering. (BTW in case you didn’t get the drift, don’t have any fucking dealings with Ezinames, they suck)
